2015 / 2016 Academic Year


What an amazing year we had! Lots of fun, lots of hard work , lots of outstanding achievements ! 2016 started with a trip to watch our pupils performing in sleeping beauty, the professional pantomime which ran for a month over the Christmas and New year period. A wonderful experience for our pupils and a real insight into the life of a performer.




In March, all pupils performed the full length musical Charlie and The Chocolate Factory. What an amazing journey Charlie and The Chocolate Factory was! Lots of hard work from every single pupil in the school, amazing acting, singing and dance skills from everybody, great team work, fantastic performances. A massive thank you to Catherine, Josh and Mark our amazing and inspiring teachers who gave everybody so much confidence and self-belief.  The two performances raised over £500 for the Teenage Cancer Trust.


In April, one of our West End stars Abigail Matthews, returned to the West End to star in Goodnight Mr Tom for which she gained outstanding reviews.  Abigail had just completed  a year in The Warhorse in the West End before being offered a part in goodnight Mr Tom.


In June we had a wonderful evening watching former SSPA and Helen Laxton School of Dance pupil and now professional Ballerina Caroline Rees performing with the JSLN Ballet Company on their tour of the UK. Caroline was a pupil at our dance school from the age of 3 years and at SSPA from the age of 8. Even at a very young age Caroline was committed to becoming a professional Ballerina, so lovely to see our pupils achieveing and living their dreams.


July was definitely the highlight of the year for many with the surprise party to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Helen Laxton School of Dance in Yeovil. Hundreds of dance school and Somerset School of Performing arts pupils and teachers old and new attended the party, there were some outstanding performances, some very funny performances, lots of fun and laughter and some beautiful video messages from former pupils who are now performing and teaching all over the world. A truly magical evening !


Our annual Search For A Star Competition was an AMAZING afternoon with so many talented children performing.  The winner of the competition was 17 year old Stephen Mansey who performed an excellent drama piece, Stephen received a year's free tuition at The Somerset School of Performing Arts. The runners up were 14 year old Charlotte Hamlett who sang a beautiful song from the musical Wicked and 11 year old Matthew Brooks who entertained us with a hilarious piece of drama.

The wonderful and very talented Kate Jordan graduated form Bird College in July and before she had finished the academic year she was offered a dance role in the revival of the amazing show 42 Street in Paris. Kate is now working on the production which will open in London’s West End in 2017. Kate has been in numerous productions, she has performed on music videos, in television shows and in modelling assignments. Kate has a very exciting career ahead of her.




In September we waved goodbye to lots of our Senior pupils who gained places at top dance Schools, colleges and Universities to study danceElena Uren was awarded a place to study Drama and Theatre skills at Falmouth University after gaining a Triple Grade Distinction in her BTEC LEVEL 3 Extended Diploma in Performing Arts(Acting).


Mollie Foster at just 16 years old was offered a place at Millenium, Performers and Laine Theatre Arts, Mollie chose to go Laine Theatre Arts.

Corrie-Ella Cheshire, was offered a place to study at Stella Mann Performers College and UEL , Corrie chose to study at Stella Mann college.


Charlotte Diamond was offered a place at Chichester, Winchester, Falmouth, Plymouth & De Montfort Universities to study dance, Charlotte chose to go to De Montfort University. to study for a BA (HONS) Dance and choreography.


Alice Hobbs gained a place at The Royal Academy of Dance, Bath Spa University & the University of Worcester. Alice decided to go to the University of Worcester to study for a degree in dance and community practice.Tilly Boulay was awarded at place at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts.


Tara Ivory Jordan was awarded places at all of the top dance and theatre schools that she auditioned for, Tara has chosen to go to The Millennium Theatre Arts School.


Emma Harris was awarded a place on the 3 year degree course at Bird College after spending the summer working in Disneyland Paris.


Auditions for Peter pan, the Professional pantomime at The Octagon Theatre, Yeovil went extremely well for pupils with 15 children being chosen to be dancers and lost boys. A great experience for everybody.


December saw former pupil Elise Cohen -  Yuill release the first single from her debut album. Elise has been working on the album for years, writing and playing songs and fundraising to create her album, we wish her and all of other pupils every success in the future



2014 / 2015 Academic Year


An exciting year watching our pupils improve, grow in confidence and self esteem, learn new skills and make new friends.

Outstanding run of 6 shows at the Octagon Theatre in March followed by professional performances with Andy Abraham, Pasha Kowalev and the Strictly Come Dancing Team.

The summer term saw performances in "Shine" and "Let Me Entertain You" at the Octagon Theatre, an end of term showcase and a recording session where by the students made their first CD !!!






Our annual Search for A Star competition found 4 stars of the future who each will recieve a scholarship for 2015 - 2016.



2013/2014 Academic Year Success Stories


Another academic year over and what a year it has been, so many highlights, so much fun! Great performances by everybody at "Hairspray"  and "Dance Dance Dance 2014" also lots of our pupils performed in "Strictly Come Dancing" the Tour with Pasha and Katya, also in "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" with The Somerset Youth Dance Company &" Snow White" with the professional pantomime the Octagon theatre.



As well as working hard for performances we have also had some great fun sessions at SSPA, a great afternoon of make up and improvisation, fun audition techniques, "Search For a Star Talent show and many more great  performing arts activities bringing out the best in our pupils

A lot of outstanding  personal achievements,  Abigail Matthews gaining  her first West End contract in the amazing production of "The Warhorse and Alex Jackson receiving a second season in The West End Musical Hit "The Bodyguard" .  Paris Grassi aged 9 , on winning Star of the Future, Best Panto Animal and Best Under 16 at the South West Pantomime Awards and many more outstanding personal achievements
 It has been a fantastic and very rewarding year teaching exceptionally hard working and talented pupils who have all achieved so much. It's amazing each year to see shy, under confident children  blossom into outstanding confident performers , we are so lucky to be a part of this.

 and Mark Lawson who work so hard to enable the children to reach their full potential, giving them excellent tuition, inspiration and so much fun !!
